An Italian study on Nectarines. As part of the “Piecing it Together” series, this Papier collé responds to modern day by resisting fast-pace and digital creation.48 hours to ripen the nectarines under the sun, 48 more hours to complete this piece…and a lifetime of exploring, embracing and expressing being still.Almass grew up in Lusaka, Zambia, close to nature and away from most popular culture and technology, which she spent my teens and twenties catching up on.In her adult life, her yearning to be closer to nature and to move slower has shown up through travelling, a largely unconventional career, cooking, ceramics, watercolour practises, as well as depression and a resistance to follow the set career paths and paces of her various practises.“Piecing It Together” is supported by the Arts Council England ( @aceagrams ) DYCP fund - a project created to evolve her digital collage (below) to physical ones.
This papier collé is an exercise in intuitive placement and an expression of nature’s fluidity against its own perfect precision and power.Almass is inspired by Romanticism in English Literature and the poet’s relationship to the “I”.
Here, her commitment to developing self-trust is demonstrated through the composition of unmodulated colour and attention to layering and lines.Almass chooses to responds to restrictive environments with unrelenting creative expression steeped in defiance, rage and power, which, when gently processed, births grounded, creative, colourful and peaceful art form. This collage project, titled “Piecing It Together”, is supported by the Arts Council England DYCP fund - a project created to evolve her digital collages to physical ones.
